Many formations this year, will be remembered for their shear size and complexity, but this design, located well away from the busy A4 road to Marlborough, will remain very special to the people who visited it.

The question to why this formation stands out from the rest is quite simple, because the three major rules have all been fulfilled on the Devil’s Den formation. Design, Position, Location. These are the three fundamental aspects to Crop Circling, to make your visit to a formation enjoyable. Luckily this year, many of the formations have been located in wonderful locations, but to have a design positioned next to an ancient Dolman, in quite a tranquil place, and with a breathtaking pattern, combines everything for a memorable experience.

The ancient dolman, is situated in a piece of landscape which rarely sees a human face, only now and again, this wonderful set of three stones, with a top lintel will have the Farmer to keep it company. The majority of the year, it stands alone, away from the crowds of Avebury. However, 1999 has put this location back on the map, for the crop circle community.

The formation itself is positioned within a slight dip in the field, on a gentle incline. The pattern is only about a 100 feet away from the Dolman, (see pole images) but is in a direct line along the field. (See pole shot behind Dolman). The Crop Circle Connector was very lucky to see the formation when it was only a few days old, not many people has visited the formation, as its situated about a quarter of a mile away from the A4 road. On entering the design, its floor construction was simply beautiful. There were some wonderful small 2-3ft channels running around the outer perimeter crop, which indicates a Wind Tube effect.

On inspecting the many circles inside the formation, I noticed that all of them were running in a clockwise rotation, but on closer inspection, it would seem that the smaller outer circles running down each diminishing arm were not quite circular in form. Some had almost a Triangular and Rhombus shape, which meant that the crop was slightly pointed on one side, but a few still retained a their circular shape.

The very night this formation formed, a power failure was experienced by the local residence’s, between 11-1pm. This would be around the time that the formation could have been forming, and must be included within this report, as the two events may have been related? However, it remains a classic example, on what can sometimes occur around the appearance of the crop circles.
